Last week we went to Margate and visit the Turner Contemporary. I did this to get some inspiration of the project: Art & Activism. I wanted to experiment with some activism issues and the art works displayed in this gallery inspired me a lot.

Besides, when I went outside and appreciated the stunning views, I found there a large number of rainbow things on the Margate streets. It was interesting and I understand the rainbow flag is related to LGBT. When I continue to walking, I found a cafe which have a logo with the word “queer”, also related to LGBT.

I think this happened because those people want to get approval and respect with other people. Moreover, the problem could have been because some of normal people always treat them with a different look. I considered to get a good result for this topic is a long way to go, but I believe in the not far futureI it will come true.

This make me think that every life comes from equality, but now there are still many unequal problems in this real society. As successors in the new century, we should look beyond our eyes to respect and accept the existence of these people. I also has a friend who is a lesbian, but in my view, she is same as me and just do the things she really want, no one can deprive her of this right.

From now on, I consider that we can keep silent or give support, but never discriminate or oppose to LGBT. And I choice this topic as my presentation theme, and in this week our group will do more research about “freedom of speech” especially for LGBT in term of gender equality.

Blog 6_Project 2: Better Future

The time passed quickly and the time came to the end of the language course. In the second project, I researched a lot of designs about sustainable development.

Today, with environmental issues and energy issues increasingly prominent, the idea of sustainable development has been widely valued. In fact, it is to incorporate the idea of sustainable development into the field of design.

Sustainable design is a design concept and method that is based on resource conservation and environmental protection. It should not be an initiative and proposal. It should be the direction of real civilization and future development. Sustainable design reflects people’s reflection on the environmental and ecological damage caused by modern science and technology culture, and also reflects the return of designer morality and social responsibility. From the perspective of scientific development and the sustainability of social development, green design will be an inevitable trend of design development, bringing new ideas and new ways to people’s lives, and bringing new challenges to the design industry.

From this project I learned, design is an activity process that conveys a plan through visual form. Design is a general term for a process of planning a comprehensive project, and the planning and planning process of any creation activity can be understood as design. The sense of three-dimensional space represented by graphic design is not a real three-dimensional space, but merely an illusion space formed by the visual guidance of human beings. It is not easy to achieve a balanced aesthetic and environmental awareness. These principles can help designers and engineers create better solutions at a lower cost, faster, and more efficiently to address major environmental and social challenges. From this project I learned, design is an activity process that conveys a plan through visual form. “Sustainable Design” is a term currently used, but it is not a separate branch of the design, nor is it an optional accessory to the existing design. In this era, all designs should be sustainable – in terms of environmental, economic and social aspects. The concept phase is the most critical, as designers can achieve the greatest change by looking at the problem from different angles.

Consider whether there is a way to make a design or product smaller, lighter, made of less material, and designed to minimize waste.

Clever Little Bag : Puma shoe packaging by Yves Béhar

When YvesBéhar was responsible for designing shoe packaging for Puma, he developed the Clever Little Bag, which abandoned the traditional combination of boxes and lids. It is estimated that it will reduce 8,500 tons of paper, save 20 million megajoules of electricity, reduce 1 million liters of fuel oil, save 1 million liters of water, and 500,000 liters of diesel will save transportation and save 275 tons of plastic. By his design, it reducing waste and carbon dioxide emissions from normal shoe packaging.

The Think® Chair by Steelcase Inc

As a designer, we need to create easy and cheaper repairable and scalable products, rather than forcing consumers to buy new products again when the product reaches its shelf life.

The design from this company looks like a daily office chair, but the Think® Chair is an amazing 99% recyclable. It was made up to 44% recycled material, it takes only five minutes to disassemble, and damaged parts can be easily replaced with other parts because it is easy to upgrade.

The goal of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is to improve the principles and values of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning, thus, promoting a shift in the way people behave. From those research I learned, sustainable design requires the harmonious development of people and the environment, designing products, services and systems that meet the needs of both the present and the sustainable development of future generations. Sustainability is an increasingly important issue for designers and the public that the design serves. This is not only because designers have created or are making a lot of waste, but also because their work is also used to help sustain development and warn themselves and consumers in different ways.

Some art works from TATE Morden

Global warming is a phenomenon related to nature. Because people burn fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, deforestation and incineration, they generate large amounts of carbon dioxide. Lead to the rise of the Earth’s temperature, the greenhouse effect. Through these works of art to show people the changes in the world and to alert them to make people aware and make changes.

  • As for tomorrow’s field trip, I want to go to three galleries and find some inspiration for our project 2 – better future.

First, I want to visit the Takis exhibition at Tate Modern which coast £13 per person. This is the largest Takis exhibition ever held in the UK, and in the exhibition we will encounter signal sculptures and forests inspired by radar-like magnetic objects. I choose this because I think this exhibition is very interesting. The nails are still in the air, and the cylinder and the ball jump together. However, none of this was a supernatural result, and Takis did not try to fool anyone to convince them that this was a supernatural result.

Besides, I want to go to OLAFUR ELIASSON IN REAL LIFE at Tate Modern which coast £18. Known for its sculptural and large installation art, OLAFUR ELIASSON uses elemental materials such as light, water and temperature to enhance the audience’s experience. I want to see this exhibition because in the charming installation of Elias, I will find your senses, the people around me and the world. Some works of art introduce natural phenomena such as rainbows into the gallery space. Others use reflections and shadows to play the way we perceive and interact with the world. Many of the works stem from the artist’s research into complex geometry, motion patterns, and his interest in color theory.

In addition, another exhibition I want to visit is DÓRA MAURER at Tate Modern and the most direct reason is because it is for free (hahaha) and it is the first time in British. In the exhibition I will see about 35 works, revealing the diversity of her work, including graphic works, photographs, movies and paintings. The show spans more than 50 years and highlights the playful conceptual approach she has brought to her experiments in all media. As for the reason I choose this one is I learned that she is a person who has a passion for art, movement and perception is an eternal topic in her work, never bound by form and media, so she is full of curiosity about her work.

Thus, this is my tomorrow plan, and maybe I will do some change. Hope everyone will have a nice trip.

“I think my ‘coming out’ may have softened my family’s attitudes; it’s easier to accept something you don’t understand if a family member you already know and love comes out as gay. ”

Milo, 30 (Wales)

While doing the proposal, I got some data about the people around LGBT who think about them.

To how many people in your family are you open about your sexual orientation or gender identity?
LGBT people who have experienced domestic abuse in the last year.

As you can see, for the LGBT people, to achieve heterosexuality, their sexual orientation or gender identity is to learn self-acceptance. This is not an easy task, so getting positive recognition from family, friends and the community can help them gain happiness and confidence in the true self.

The study reveals that the LGBT community still lacks the support of family members and friends and the community, and that people are not open to their sexual orientation and gender identity.

This inspired me a lot in help LGBT people to recognized themselves. In my opinion, the lack of support from family and friends is the most important reason why LGBT people do not dare to speak or even develop mental illness. For the reason why I did it this way, I also noticed that there are still too many LGBT people who are unable to communicate with their families and may face a lack of support. A significant number of LGBT people suffer from domestic abuse in their personal relationships.

So, why did it happened? Some people or organizations have LGBT inclusiveness, providing a welcoming space for LGBT people to worship and practice their faith. However, many faithful LGBT people are still not popular in their faith community and therefore feel unable to open to anyone in their community. The LGBT community therefore stated that more inclusive services and faith groups are needed. That is because we should provide spiritual and social support to those who strive to integrate their beliefs with gender identity or sexual orientation and family members.

What is more, from those data I learned the society is changing, most LGBT people tell at least some of their friends, and even nearly half of them are open to everyone in the family. This means that more of them can be the ones who are most important to them, which is crucial to their confidence and happiness. However, they still get some opposition voices. I feel that it will take a long time to truly agree with it, but as long as the heterosexuals change the idea about them and the LGBT people will be more confident in the feature.

Blog 2_Project 1: Art & Activism

To writing the proposal of project 1, I did a large number of research about LGBT group. As I mentioned before, our group’s message is about “are LGBT people able to be hidden or visible in the society?” Thus, our group came up the idea about help LGBT people understand who they are, and do not care about others look and speak for themselves.

While doing the research, I found an article talk about the gender neutral which means use words other than “male” and “female”. The research is talk about a “gender-neutral” pre-school in Sweden. They realized that normal gender are not a good thing, and want to use education to change it. I consider that the reason why the government do this is because parents always want to teach their children what they are, and the government are trying to do the same thing, and they are very popular at this point.

This reminds me of a well-know dancer and host who is the first transgender in China. She has the courage to show her the past, and for the reason why she transfer her gender just because she was curious about women since she was a child and wants to be a woman. She do not care about people looking at them in the very funny way and be brave to be herself. Another research is about a Chinese awareness campaign which is talk about “Love is not a choice.” I believe, being gay is not their choice, this is because they born like this. Hope the world is big enough to accommodate everyone.

This is also point out the theme of our group. From those research, in my point of view, gender is important to everyone, but can not distinguish everyone by gender. When I was a child, I developed a gender concept from my parents. For example, to enter the toilet with men and women signs, or letting me pay attention to the environment and time around and the contact distance with men. It is important to wait for a series of personal safety and spirit to protect myself. But from the research I did I learned gender is not important in some places, such as love, whether male or female, female or female, or male or female, or love without sex. In the love, gender concepts should be abandoned. For example, if you are a boy or a girl, there should be no gender discrimination. As long as the boy’s gender is tied to the child, it is not important to the individual.
